BLS for nursing students: what San Antonio programs expect before clinicals
Every nursing and allied health program has the same line in its clinical requirements: a current BLS Provider card from the American Heart Association. Here is how to get it right the first time.
Get the right card: BLS Provider, not Heartsaver
Programs ask for the AHA BLS Provider course specifically. A Heartsaver CPR AED card, an online-only certificate, or a card from a provider that is not an AHA Training Center or Training Site will usually be rejected at clinical clearance, and clearance deadlines do not move.
Your student handbook or clinical compliance checklist will state the exact wording. Read it before you book anything.
Time it so the card lasts through your rotations
An AHA BLS card is valid for two years. Programs usually require it to stay current for the whole clinical sequence, so count forward from your first placement to your last. If your card would expire mid-program, plan a renewal class for the semester before it lapses rather than the week of a placement.
What to expect in class as a first-timer
- You do not need any clinical experience. BLS is built for beginners.
- You practice on adult and infant manikins and are assessed on compressions, breaths, AED use and two-rescuer CPR.
- There is a short written exam in the classroom course. In the blended format the knowledge part is done online beforehand.
- You leave with an AHA eCard sent to your email, which is what compliance offices accept.
Blended or classroom?
Both lead to the same card. The blended HeartCode BLS format lets you do the lessons online at your own pace, then come in for a hands-on skills session. The full classroom course does everything in one visit. Students with a heavy schedule often prefer blended, and students who learn better in a room usually prefer classroom. Ask which formats are offered for your class date before you decide.
Getting a cohort certified together
Program coordinators and student organizations can book a group class so a whole cohort is certified on the same day with the same renewal date. We run group BLS classes in San Antonio and onsite for schools and training programs across Texas.
Common questions
- Which CPR certification do nursing students need?
- The American Heart Association BLS Provider course. Heartsaver and online-only certificates are generally not accepted for clinical clearance.
- Do I need BLS before nursing school starts?
- Most programs require it before the first clinical placement rather than before admission. Check your program handbook for the deadline.
- Can I take BLS online as a student?
- The knowledge portion can be done online in the blended HeartCode BLS format, but an in-person skills session with an instructor is always required to receive the AHA card.
- Is a CNA BLS card the same as a nursing BLS card?
- Yes. The BLS Provider course and card are the same regardless of your role or program.
