What to bring and what to expect on BLS class day
A BLS class is hands-on and moves quickly. Knowing the shape of the day beforehand makes it easier, especially if it is your first time on a manikin.
What to bring
- Photo ID, so the name on your eCard matches your records
- The email address you want the eCard sent to, spelled correctly
- Your HeartCode BLS completion certificate if you are in the blended format
- Your current BLS card if you are renewing, so we can confirm the renewal format
- Comfortable clothes you can kneel and move in, and hair tied back
- Water. You will be doing compressions and it is more physical than people expect
How the class runs
AHA courses follow a practice-while-watching format. The instructor plays the official video lessons and you practice each skill on the manikin at the same time, so you are doing rather than listening. Skills build in order: adult compressions and breaths, AED use, two-rescuer CPR with a bag-mask, then child and infant CPR, then choking relief.
Feedback manikins measure your rate and depth, so you know straight away whether your compressions meet the standard rather than guessing.
How you are assessed
- A skills test on adult CPR with AED and two-rescuer bag-mask ventilation
- A skills test on infant CPR
- A written exam in the classroom course. In the blended format the knowledge part is completed online beforehand
If a skill needs another attempt, the instructor works with you on it in the same session. The aim is that you leave able to do it, not just that you passed.
When your eCard arrives
After the class the instructor processes the roster and the AHA emails you a link to claim your eCard. Claim it, download the PDF, and save it somewhere you will find it in two years. Employers can verify it online using the code on the card.
Common questions
- Is there a written test in BLS?
- Yes, in the classroom course. In the blended HeartCode format the knowledge part is done online before the skills session.
- What should I wear to a BLS class?
- Comfortable clothes you can kneel in. Scrubs are fine. Avoid anything that makes it hard to get down on the floor next to a manikin.
- Do I get my BLS card the same day?
- The eCard is issued by email once the instructor processes the class roster. Keep an eye on the inbox you gave in class, including the spam folder.
- What if I fail the BLS skills test?
- The instructor gives you another attempt in the same session after working through the skill with you. Most people pass on the day.
